Reception Unit

Meet Our Teachers

Miss Beresford, Mrs Hall and Miss Edwards are the Reception teachers. They are all really nice teachers who work very hard to make sure that all of the boys and girls in Reception have a fun time and learn lots of new things!! They are kind and caring and always have a smile.

They work hard together alongside  Mrs Frosdick, Mrs Mellons and Miss Hodgson.

I’m really pleased with the effectiveness of the a little Wandle program and how quick my son has learned his sounds and to read and write after only attending 2.5 months at school, amazing achievement ! Well done for the dedication and brilliant reception teachers and TAs.

My child has settled wonderfully in reception, with the help of staff – we couldn’t be happier with the support at the start of the year.

My daughter was very nervous about starting school but since then she loves it she is coming out of her shell and making new friends.

The following document is a very useful and informative document for parents detailing ‘What to expect in the Early Years Foundation Stage’.

It’s a lengthy read but is a very useful guide for parents of children from birth to five years old. It will help you to find out more about your child’s learning and development in the EYFS.

This term we were set a reading challenge. Our children took home a little gift bag which included a bear named Hygge. Hygge bear brought with him a letter asking the children to take him to Consett Library. Hygge bear asked us to take along the reading card included in the bag so that each time they visited the library to borrow a book they could collect a stamp. He told them that once the card is full the children will be rewarded with a book as a prize.

Our children have loved this challenge, are visiting the library regularly and enjoying collecting their stamps. They often meet up with friends from their class and can’t wait to share photos of their visits on our class dojo.

We have a school therapy dog named Daisy. Daisy belongs to Mrs Gates. Daisy spends a lot of time in Year 2 in Mrs Thomas’ class but we are very lucky that she visits us in Reception regularly. We love our Daisy time where in small groups we are able to spend some time with Daisy. We make sure we follow the rules and treat Daisy with respect. Mrs Gates tells us all about Daisy and answers our questions. Daisy loves listening to stories while she’s with us, we stroke her tummy gently and she sometimes falls asleep.

On Friday 7th February as a whole school we held a ‘Stick Man Day’. We were given a challenge  to either bring a stick taller than ourselves or a stick more than 3cm in width. We could dress up too in brown or green or as a stick if we wanted to.  We had the most amazing day. We shared the story and spent the day carrying out activities linked to the Stick Man Story. We also loved creating our own stick men to take home. Don’t they look amazing?  After a fun filled day we finished off with warm muddy Stick man hot chocolate and watched Stick Man.

On World Book Day the children all came into school dressed in their pyjamas and brought their favourite book from home. The children enjoyed sharing their book with their friends.

As part of our work on People and Communities the children found out all about Chinese New Year. The children had made lanterns and dancing dragons. This year it was the year of the snake and the children made snakes. The children found out what happens during Chinese New Year, one of the things the children learnt was during Chinese New Year Chinese families get together and have food together. The children had a Chinese New Year meal of rice, noodles, rice crackers, prawn crackers, fortune cookie and some children even tried some sweet chili sauce. The children also ate their food using chopsticks.

As part of our work on People and Communities the children found out about Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day. The children looked at the Curiosity Cube and they talked about what they could see. This led to the children talking about Pancake Day. They found out how pancakes are made and the ingredients they needed. The children then went into the hall and Mrs Frosdick made pancakes. The children chose the toppings they wanted on top. The children enjoyed sitting with their friends and chatting while eating their pancakes.

The children went for a walk to the forest. On the way they looked for signs of Winter and features of the environment. Once at the forest the children had a great time exploring the forest. Some of the children climbed tress. Some of the children ran up the big hill, some of them chose to roll down the hill. They looked for insects and other bugs. The children had an amazing time and can not wait for their next visit.

The children had been finding out about freezing and melting as part of our science work. The children held a chocolate button in their hand. Before doing this, the children had to predict what they thought might happen and why. The children held their button tight and it began to melt, some took longer than others. The children then talked about why it melted. They thought it was because our hands are hot and hot things make things melt.

At Christmas the children were visited by Santa Claus. He brought them all a gift. The children were very excited to see Santa Claus.

During Halloween the children brought in pumpkins. The children enjoyed playing with them outside.  The children had lots of fun carrying them around, drawing on them, looking inside of them.
