Intent
At Consett Infant School we are committed to ensuring our children leave our school with a wide breadth of experience and knowledge about a range of different artistic styles and cultures. We recognise the importance of developing our children’s own skills in Art. Through Art and Design, it is our intention that children learn a range of skills and are able to confidently use these skills in their own independent work. We believe that it is important for children to develop an appreciation for Art by exposing them to a wide range of techniques, styles and artists. Within school, it is our intention that Art will be delivered in a way where all children feel they can have a go and develop their own style by encouraging and celebrating the wide range of abilities evident in all Art sessions. At Consett Infant School, we believe in the importance of children seeing that Art can be enjoyable and achievable for all and by exposing to a range of Artists it will help the them to find and develop their own artistic style.
Therefore , at Consett Infant School it is our intention that:
- Children will leave school with an appreciation of Art.
- Children will appreciate that anyone can become an Artist.
- Children will leave school with a deeper understanding of Art and their own style.
Implementation
Each Art and Design topic shows progression of skills and knowledge and identifies desired outcomes in line with National Curriculum and EYFS documents. Each year group focuses on different themes and skills to ensure continued interest in the subject as well as acquiring new knowledge. Planning shows development of techniques, including control and use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Children also explore how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation and local area.
Throughout the Foundation Stage, children are given opportunities to develop their ideas and practise controlling their skills when painting, drawing or using clay. Children also experience outdoor Art work and make their own collages. The children are always able to access Art materials in the Foundation Stage in order to develop a personal enjoyment for the subject.
Throughout Key Stage 1 children study a new Artist each term, giving them the inspiration and knowledge about the subject. Our Art curriculum includes Famous Artists, Local Artists and Art from different cultures so that our children leave our school with a wide breadth of experience and knowledge about a range of different artistic styles and cultures. Children receive high quality Art lessons from staff who have received guidance and support with planning and delivering Art lessons. Children receive one lesson of Art each week.
Impact
Art and Design learning is loved by teachers and children across school. Teachers have high expectations and quality evidence is presented in a variety of ways. Children are encouraged to use technical vocabulary accurately and are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified. Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them through art and design on the world. Through our Art and Design curriculum, children become more confident in analyzing their work and giving opinions on their own and others works of art. Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. Children in school are encouraged to speak confidently about their Art and Design work and their skills.
