At Consett Infant School we provide a high quality, creative curriculum within a caring, nurturing and inclusive community. We have been on a journey to develop our curriculum so that it engages, enthuses and energises our children into wanting to learn. We have planned our curriculum with end goals in sight so that we know what we want our children to be able to achieve by the time they leave us at the end of Year 2.
What Will a Consett Infant Child Learn?
At Consett Infant School we have developed our curriculum in line with National Curriculum (2014) and EYFS guidelines (2021) to ensure that all children have access to the key knowledge, skills and concepts to which they are entitled. Each subject (or area in EYFS) has been scrutinised and the key areas of learning have been identified- in all areas of the curriculum and beyond from Nursery to Year 2. Key knowledge is revisited and we used a spiralised approach to ensure our children have opportunities to revisit and retain knowledge.
How Do We Deliver the Core Knowledge and Skills and Bring Learning to Life?
At Consett Infant School we use a thematic approach to engage children in learning. Each term, every year group has a theme around which learning experiences are planned. We use these themes (Giants and Beanstalks, Fire, Knights and Castles etc) to provide out children with a hook! We immerse our children into their learning through purposeful, meaningful contexts. These themes have been mapped out over the year. We have thought about the key knowledge, skills and attitudes we want our children to have, in order for them to be active, knowledgeable members of their community.
Skills and Attitudes We Promote At Consett Infant School
Underpinning our curriculum, we aim to develop the values and skills we believe are essential for learning. We believe these skills are critical for any child to achieve in education and beyond. We aim to provide a classroom environment where independence, thinking skills, collaboration and active learning are developed at the same time as the curriculum knowledge is acquired. We aim to equip the children with skills that will enable them to be lifelong learners. Please see the document below for more information.
